    Immersive Architecture Asia 2019

    What happens when the Italian-born Immersive Architecture visits Asia? Im-Arch is the first conference on virtual and augmented reality focusing on architecture, design, real estate and cultural heritage. The very first Im-Arch conference was held in Venice in 2017. Im-Arch Asia 2019 was the very first Asian edition of Immersive architecture which was held in Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) campus on January 18 and 19, 2019.

    Organized by Global Innovators, an innovation based firm of which ID Architects Executive Director Jin Sung is the Executive Director, believes in leveraging tech in the built industry, Im-Arch Asia 2019 was home to a speaker line-up you wouldn’t find anywhere. Speakers came from Asia/Singapore, Europe, Australia and the United States. Leading voices weighed in, including Cathy Hackl, Johan Hanegraaf, Simon Yorke, Andrew Yip, Dave Mackenzie, Nina Boldyreva, Dr. Lu Weiquan, Andres Rivera and other thought leaders and ground breakers who come from a wide range of disciplines.

    Celestino Geronimo Jr, cheif organizer of this year’s event, opened the conference on Friday with a keynote address. Fabio D’Agnano, the curator of Im-Arch Venice delivered the keynote on Saturday. Jeff Mottle of CG Architect moderated the open panel discussion during the conference. Global Innovators’ Jin Sung capped the event with closing remarks.  It was an engaging experience of networking for the entire immersive architecture family.

    The main topic of focus was VR/Ar design. Topics included in the conference were architecture, interior design, computer engineering, design technology, retail, creating virtual spaces, cultural heritage and art installations to unique museum experiences. The subjects of focus included Aec firms, XR consultants, Platforms, Cultural Heritage, Architectural Design, Architectural Collaboration, Real Estate and Real Time Rendering. Two workshops were held on January 17, 2019 , a day prior to to the conference, on Architectural 3D Model Photogrammetry + AR Unity Development conducted by Peter Locharernkul and Custom VR Development using Unity conducted by Johan Hanegraaf.

    The eminent speakers presented unique VR/AR projects that they have developed for their respective collectives, each aiming to leverage on the use of VR and AR as part of their design processes. Though these solutions are unique to every use case, the fundamental objectives of improving work efficiency and creating more engaging content for their respective products are paramount to their research.

    Participants not only got to hear the speakers deliver their insights, but were also able to experience some of the VR/AR solutions in the VR Rooms, which were installed during the Im-Arch Asia 2019 event, thereby creating a more immersive experience for the delegates. They were able to experience the new technologies inside the VR Rooms, to test hardware and software.

    Im-Arch Asia 2019 hosted a wide range of esteemed architects, property developers, architectural visualization companies, companies producing hardware and/or software for VR/AR, companies who procure visualization services, museum and galleries managers and students. This year was an eclectic mix of professionals in their respective fields.

    The two-day conference was a great platform to learn the latest technologies and innovation in the VR/AR design industry, with a lot of case studies. It was also a great opportunity to network with all vested in the virtual reality scene. There were a lot of networking moments with the attendees and speakers. It was possibly the best opportunity to connect with the VR/AR gurus and geeks alike! The attendees walked away from the sessions reenergized and reinvigorated, immersed in a sea of knowledge on VR/AR design.
